Abstract

Incorporating mindfulness and acceptance-based treatment into psychiatric care has grown in significance for a variety of psychological well-being benefits. Interventions such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other acceptance-oriented intervention have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and other psychological conditions. This article summarises and critically evaluates current evidence on the effectiveness of the mindfulness programme based on data collated from systematic reviews and meta-analysis from a variety of mental disorder studies. It also reviews the key processes involved in how such interventions enhance psychological function, specifically in attention regulation, cognitive flexibility, emotional control and self-compassion. In addition, the review examines the scope of mindfulness and acceptance-based psychotherapeutic approaches in the broader context of outpatient clinical care, where mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies are suggested as complementary to psychopharmacological medication and traditional psychotherapy. The application of the ACT in a human patient is highlighted using the ACT Case Study in which psychological flexibility and resilience are improved, leading to better psychological wellbeing. The results suggest that when integrated into standard mental health treatment, MBIs have a reliable effect on all of the three broad domains of emotional functioning, psychological distress, and quality of life. Although there are a range of implementation hurdles to overcome (including clinician training, patient adherence and resource constraints), the emerging empirical evidence suggests that integration of mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies into outpatient psychiatric care are beneficial for patients' psychological recovery and psychological well-being more broadly across the lifespan.
