Abstract

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide, making early detection a critical component in improving survival outcomes. Advances in screening technologies over the past two decades have significantly enhanced the accuracy, accessibility, and effectiveness of breast cancer diagnostics. This review article investigates recent innovations in breast cancer screening, focusing on the progression from traditional imaging modalities to emerging, technology-driven approaches. Conventional methods such as mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) continue to form the foundation of screening programs; however, each presents limitations related to sensitivity, specificity, radiation exposure, or cost. In response, novel technologies have emerged to address these gaps and provide more reliable diagnostic pathways. The study highlights major technological developments including digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography), contrast-enhanced mammography, automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), and advanced MRI techniques that offer improved lesion detection, particularly in women with dense breast tissue. Additionally, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning into imaging interpretation has transformed diagnostic workflows by reducing human error, enhancing image analysis precision, and supporting risk-stratified screening approaches. Molecular imaging modalities, such as positron emission mammography (PEM) and optical imaging, further demonstrate growing potential for early detection at the cellular and metabolic levels. Emerging non-invasive and minimally invasive innovations, including liquid biopsies and circulating biomarkers, are also explored as promising complementary tools for personalized screening strategies. While these advancements demonstrate strong potential, challenges remain in terms of cost, accessibility in low-resource settings, standardization, and long-term clinical validation. Overall, this investigation underscores that continuous technological evolution in breast cancer screening is driving earlier diagnosis, more accurate risk assessment, and better patient outcomes. However, equitable implementation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and sustained research are essential to fully realize the benefits of these innovations in global healthcare systems.
